A youth project will be taking over a derelict police station and turning it into an art venue in Gateshead.

The Space Invaders group uses architecture graduates working with young people from the town to reclaim unused spaces for creative purposes.

The transformation of the Old Police House at Swinburne Road is part of celebrations for the Cultural Olympiad.

Funding comes from NE-Generation, which aims to create a lasting impact from the Olympics across the North East.

Space Invaders is one of 15 cultural projects receiving funding from a £1m pot.

The team will turn the disused police station into an art exhibition space ready to host public exhibitions during The Bridges Festival in August.
