Second closure for A696 in Northumberland

  • Published

A section of one of the main routes in Northumberland has been closed after a tanker containing aviation fuel rolled onto its side.

The incident happened on the A696 between Kirkwhelpington and the B6342 in the early hours.

Emergency services are at the scene and a pump is removing the fuel from the tanker. Diversions are in place and the road will be shut all day.

It is the second time in less than three weeks that it has been blocked.

On 28 May, a wind turbine stem came off a trailer near Otterburn and the recovery operation took five days.
