Sunderland singer Ben Forster has won reality show Superstar and will play Jesus in an arena tour.

The 31-year-old received the most public votes in the live final of the ITV show on Wednesday night.

The stage school graduate will now take the lead role in the tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical Jesus Christ Superstar in September.

He will star alongside comedian Tim Minchin, singer Melanie C and DJ Chris Moyles.

Mr Forster won the vote after singing Queen's Who Wants to Live Forever.

He said: "I can't believe it, I wasn't expecting this to happen in my lifetime.

"So thank you so much to everyone who voted, I will absolutely do you proud."

Mr Foster beat Rory Taylor, 24, from the Wirral, and Roger Wright, 41, from London.

The judging panel for the show featured Lord Lloyd Webber alongside Melanie C, singer Jason Donovan and comedian Dawn French.
