The Tyne and Wear Metro between Wallsend and Tynemouth will be closed for 23 days from Saturday.

Work is take place to modernise the Metro infrastructure, replace tracks and renew embankments, bridges, signals and communications technology.

Nexus, which owns and manages the line, said works are due to finish on Monday, 3 September, but further weekend closures will take place after that.

A replacement bus service will operate on the route.

Ken Mackay, Director of Rail and Infrastructure for Nexus said: "To deliver these works in the safest, most cost effective and least disruptive way possible we need to have a major line closure, similar to the one in March and April last year."

Two further weekend closures are planned for 8-9 September and 22-23 September.
