Council houses could be built on the former home of Wallsend Boys Club, North Tyneside Council has announced.
The council wants to build 12 homes on land at Station Road, Wallsend, and talks have been held with the club.
Mayor Linda Arkley said building council houses had been one of her priorities for some time.
The club, which is developing a new headquarters in Wallsend, trained England footballers Alan Shearer and Peter Beardsley as youngsters.
