Tyne and Wear Metro fares to rise in January

Nexus said the changes were necessary because of higher running costs

Passengers using the Tyne and Wear Metro will see fares increase in 2013.

Nexus confirmed on Thursday that prices would go up by an average of 4.1% while peak day tickets would be withdrawn.

The revised fares were approved by the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) and will take effect from 6 January.

Nexus director general Bernard Garner said fares had been kept as low as possible. Single tickets will increase by 10p.

Mr Garner said: "There are greater discounts for students, and people who renew passes online will save money too."

The cost of a day saver ticket will increase by 20p but passengers using the network before 09:00 GMT will see a reduction as a result of the peak pass being abolished.

Annual tickets have gone up by £20 to £520.

The price of a Metro Gold Card, used by pensioners, is still under review ahead of an ITA decision early in 2013.
