Housing plan for Mount Oswald Golf Club site

Plans for housing and student accommodation on a golf course in County Durham have been given the go-ahead by council planners.

The £200m scheme at Mount Oswald Golf Club, near Durham City, includes more than 300 homes, and 13 student blocks.

Banks Developments said it would bring investment to the area and create construction jobs.

However, some local people argue that it would mean the loss of green space and lead to traffic chaos.

A proposal in 2007 for a large business park by the same company was turned down in 2008.

It described the new plans, which also include a play area, a community garden and a health centre, as a "positive legacy for decades to come".

There would be about 120 people employed on site during the construction phase, and further permanent posts at a new convenience store and small offices.
