Lindisfarne Gospels bring £8.3m to Durham economy

The gospels were on show at Durham University's Palace Green Library from the beginning of July to the end of September

The Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition in Durham generated £8.3m for the local economy, a report has revealed.

Displayed from July to September, the 1,300-year-old manuscripts attracted about 100,000 visitors from nearly 60 countries.

These benefitted hundreds of businesses in the city and around the region.

A report by organisers described the exhibition as an event with "global reach, unprecedented approval rating, and significant economic value".

Durham City Chamber of Trade said in a statement: "The passion and enthusiasm for the gospels enveloped the whole of the city.

"This is reflected in the extremely positive feedback we have received from many of the businesses who reported a significant upturn in trade over the summer."
