Auction for Sir Bobby Robson charity and children's hospices raises £97,000

An online auction has raised £97,642 for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and East Anglia Children's Hospices.

A shirt worn by Gary Speed when he played for Sheffield United against Ipswich Town in 2008 fetched £720.

The top-selling item was VIP tickets to the FIFA Ballon d'Or Awards in Zurich which raised £7,100.

The auction, organised by Gina Long, a long-time supporter of both charities, featured 114 lots which attracted 2,596 bids from around the world.

More than 50 people bid to go and watch Barcelona train and play with the winner paying £5,900, while a set of books signed by David Walliams fetched £880.

Ms Long said: "A colossal amount of money has been raised for two very special charities that make a real difference to so many people."

Sir Bobby Robson's wife, Lady Elsie, said: "Once again, the football community has given us tremendous support and so many other people, too many to name, have helped make this auction a success.

"It's been a great team effort."
