Thousands of North soldiers who fought at the Somme are remembered

This Friday marks the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme. It lasted for months, but its first day was the bloodiest in the history of the British Army.

On 1 July 1916, soldiers from the North East were in the thick of the attack on the Germans in Northern France - and suffered some of the heaviest losses.

To remember their sacrifices, Army Reserve members of today retrace the steps of WWI soldiers in training who ended up fighting for King and country.
