WW1 life-saving prayer book donated to Durham Light Infantry

A prayer book that saved the life of a World War One soldier from Consett in County Durham has been donated to the DLI Collection.

Durham Light Infantryman Tommy Crawford was injured when he charged a German trench and was bayoneted in the chest.

His life was saved by a cigarette case and a prayer book which were in his top pocket.

His son, Brian, who now lives in Thailand, has donated the book 36 years after his death.
