Newcastle crash: Layton Darwood, 5, dies after being hit by van

Layton Darwood was fatally injured and died in hospital

A five-year-old boy has died after being hit by a van in Newcastle.

Layton Darwood was fatally injured when he was struck by the Ford Transit in Willow Avenue, Fenham, on Monday evening, and later died in hospital.

The vehicle was believed to be towing a trailer with a digger on it at the time of the crash just before 17:00 BST.

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the collision and police have urged witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage to get in touch.

Sgt Lee Butler, from Northumbria Police, said: "This is a devastating time for Layton's family and our thoughts go out to them at this horrendous time.

"The whole community is saddened by what has happened and I know they will rally round to support them.

"We would ask that people respect their privacy as they try to come to terms with their tragic loss and avoid speculating about the circumstances of the collision at this early stage."
