Snow has been falling across northern England creating picturesque scenes.

It was particularly heavy around Allenheads in Northumberland, with flurries also reported in Teesdale, County Durham and Cumbria.

Forecasters predict even colder air will move down from Greenland bringing biting temperatures to much of the UK.

Temperatures could fall as low as minus 15C (5F) in parts of Scotland overnight before slightly warmer weather brings a respite at the weekend.
