A mother charged over the death of her two-year-old daughter in County Durham has appeared in court.

Maya Chappell was found in a critical condition at a house in Shotton Colliery on 28 September and died in hospital two days later.

Dana Carr, 24, of Shotton Colliery, has been charged with allowing the death of a child and child cruelty.

She did not enter a plea when she faced Newton Aycliffe magistrates on Wednesday and was remanded in custody.

She is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Friday.

In October, 26-year-old Michael Daymond, also of Shotton Colliery, was charged with Maya's murder.

It is believed Mr Daymond had been in a relationship with Ms Carr.

He is also due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Friday.
