A wave dislodged the dome from the top of South Shields Lighthouse

The moment the dome from South Shields Lighthouse was ripped off has been captured in pictures.

The lighthouse was battered by Storm Babet leading to the dome being "forcibly removed".

The harbour master at Port of Tyne said that the damage was caused by a "relentless combination of sea and wind".

Shipping activities have been suspended in the area and are unlikely to resume within the next 48 hours.
