A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a suspected poisoning in Newcastle.

Doctor Thomas Kwan, 52, was charged with attempted murder after "unknown substances" were found in a property Ingleby Barwick on Tuesday.

Police said the woman in her 30s had been bailed pending further inquiries.

The alleged victim, a man in his 70s who is not one of Mr Kwan's patients, remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital, police said.

Mr Kwan, of Brading Court, Ingleby Barwick, appeared before magistrates in Newcastle on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody.

The court heard Mr Kwan works as a GP in Sunderland.

He is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on 6 March.
