Rowers warned about Durham bridge risk

Rowers and other river users have been warned not to pass under a Durham bridge because of the risk of falling masonry.

Traffic is temporarily being diverted over Prebends Bridge while Saddler Street is closed for repaving.

The structural engineer for Durham Cathedral, which owns the bridge, warned of a risk of stonework falling into the river during the diversion.

Durham County Council said it hoped to reopen the river to traffic soon.

Council strategic traffic manager Dave Wafer said: "We appreciate the closure has caused concern to river users but we are continuing to work with all parties to reopen the river at the earliest possible opportunity.

"Scaffolding is due to be erected underneath the bridge next week to allow both further assessment and offer protection to river users."
