Wiltshire waste consultation due to begin

A public consultation on proposals for dealing with waste in Wiltshire is due to begin in the summer.

Wiltshire Council's cabinet approved a document outlining 43 possible waste management sites on Tuesday.

Facilities that would be located there include recycling centres, treatment centres and composting facilities.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said the proposed sites were mainly on existing waste sites, and on industrial or brownfield land.

An eight-week public consultation is due to begin in June.

'No option'

Places being considered include Parkgate Farm in Purton, Parkgrounds Farm in Wootton Bassett, Barnground in South Cerney and Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate in Chippenham.

The council spokesman said the current charge of £48 per tonne of waste sent to landfill was due to rise over the next few years.

Councillor Toby Sturgis said: "We have no option but to find sites where waste can be sustainably managed and treated.

"All new facilities would be heavily-regulated, modern and clean and would provide a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to landfill."
