Melksham's new service campus site is purchased

The location of a new community campus in Melksham has been confirmed.

Wiltshire Council has purchased the Melksham House and Blue Pool site in the town centre, currently owned by Cooper Tires.

The proposed facility will include a leisure centre with swimming pool, indoor bowls rink and a library.

Melksham area board chairman Jonathon Seed said, "I am pleased that our desire to secure a central site for a service campus has become a reality."

Initially, the Woolmore Farm site on the outskirts of Melksham was earmarked for the project.

However, a town centre location became the council's preferred choice following an area board meeting in March.

Mr Seed said: "There is no doubt we would have gone ahead with the campus at Woolmore Farm but the site we are purchasing from Cooper Tires ticks all the boxes in providing a central and accessible site for local services."

Subject to contract, planners will start assessing the site in the next few weeks, and work on building the £23m campus will begin in late 2012.
