Dragonfly habitat work by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust

The first phase of work to improve the habitat for dragonflies at an old quarry and landfill site has been completed.

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust bought Lower Moor Farm, near the Cotswold Water Park, from the Hills Group in 2007.

Working with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust, and with funding from the Hills Group, the site now includes winter grazing for cattle.

It also has an orchard, bird hide, over new 2,000 trees and new access paths.

A Wiltshire Wildlife Trust spokesman said the trees were planted to attract nightingales.

The second phase of the project will create corridors for dragonfly and damselfly to move from Lower Moor Farm into Gloucestershire through the Cotswold Water Park.

Some 17 of the 32 species of dragonfly and damselfly recorded in Wiltshire were found at the complex, the spokesman said.

He added that the corridors would enable the insects to begin to populate other parts of the country.
