Secret World War II bunker unearthed in Coleshill

Archaeologists examining the site of a secret World War II headquarters in Wiltshire have discovered the entrance to a second underground bunker.

The site in Coleshill was used by Winston Churchill as a base to train guerrillas in the event of an invasion.

Since the Coleshill Auxiliary Research Team began their investigation in January, they have unearthed a large underground bunker and artefacts.

The team's Tom Sykes said the latest find was "very exciting".

'Proper entrance'

"If we just found some edges of corrugated iron dropping down into a hole we could have just said it was an ammo dump or anything," he said.

"But due to the nature of what we've found we know that this is part of a proper entrance to something."

Excavation on the National Trust-owned Coleshill Estate has been halted temporarily because of a safety issue.

It will resume on Friday when Swindon Conservative MP Justin Tomlinson visits the site.
