A children's centre in Calne is the first in Wiltshire to achieve a prestigious award for its "family-friendly" approach.

The Sure Start Children's Centre has been awarded Investors in Families accreditation.

The project provides free support and advice to parents and carers of children under five.

Gill Hanlan, Wiltshire Council's head of early years and childcare, said it was "a fantastic achievement".

"The number of children and families that have been supported by the children's centre is considerable and the team have great plans to develop their services further," she added.

The centre, which has worked with almost 1,500 parents and children since it opened in 2008, is managed by Barnardo's on behalf of Wiltshire Council.

Staff and volunteers provide a wide range of services including cookery courses, breastfeeding support, dads groups and first aid training.

Barnardo's team leader Katie Sims said: "The award is a tribute to the hard work of all of our staff and volunteers as well as the achievements of local families."
