Swindon Great Western Hospital hospital installs training cameras

Medical students will soon be able to watch patients having heart surgery on a live TV link at a Wiltshire hospital.

TV cameras have been installed in the Cardiac Cath lab at Swindon's Great Western Hospital (GWH) as part of a £2.5m refurbishment.

The trial using the TV cameras is due to start from the beginning of October.

Consultant Cardiologist Dr Edward Barnes said it would benefit a wide range of people.

He added: "The plan is that we can use that for teaching and we can have live cases that we can broadcast down to the lecture theatre and further afield.

"We can hopefully in the future use this facility to educate both medical students and other people in training for both angioplasty, and possibly complex pacing."

The project was funded by the GWH NHS Foundation Trust charitable organisation, and cost about £40,000.
