First phase of Swindon town centre revamp is approved

The development will be built on the site of the old central police station
Plans to build an 850-space car park and a block of 45 apartments in Swindon town centre have been approved by council planners.
It is the first phase of the £330m Union Square development which received outline planning permission in 2011.
Developers Muse want to begin building work in late Spring on the site of the former central police station.
Doug Finlay, development director at Muse, said: "This approval is a significant milestone for the project."
When completed, the apartments will be operated by Westlea Housing Association and the car park managed by Swindon Borough Council.
The council's deputy leader, Garry Perkins said it was "further proof that the regeneration of Swindon town centre is moving ahead."
