In pictures: Restoration of church medieval wall paintings
Conservationists have started work to clean and restore medieval wall paintings which have fallen into disrepair at St Mary's Lydiard Tregoz Church in Lydiard Park, near Swindon.
The church contains multi-layered wall and ceiling paintings from the 13th Century which were uncovered during the early 20th Century restoration of the church under architect CE Ponting.
In 2011 the church launched an appeal to raise money for vital repairs to the building, which is considered to be the oldest in Swindon.
The cleaning and conservation of its unique medieval wall paintings is the first phase of restoration work which will also include repairs to the dormer windows and the St John Chapel roof.
The church's fund-raising appeal for the restoration was boosted by grants from a number of bodies including English Heritage and Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. The church will remain open to the public while the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of July, is carried out.
