Wiltshire-based soldiers remembered at Warminster service

A service of remembrance has taken place in Warminster to honour the lives of two Wiltshire-based soldiers killed in Afghanistan.

Sgt Gareth Thursby, 29, and Pte Thomas Wroe, 18, both of 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, were killed in Helmand's Nahr-e Saraj district.

It is understood they were shot by a rogue Afghan policeman who lured them to his side with a fake injury.

Both soldiers were based at Warminster's Battlesbury Barracks.

The attack happened on 15 September.

Sgt Thursby, a father-of-two, from Skipton, North Yorkshire, who was promoted to sergeant in 2010, had previously served in Kosovo and Iraq.

His widow, Louise, previously described him as "our hero".

"He was an amazing husband and father: happy, full of life and kind-hearted with a passion for his work and family," she said.

Pte Wroe, from Meltham, West Yorkshire, who joined the Army in 2010, was deployed to Afghanistan in July.

The Act of Remembrance service was held by the Royal British Legion at the Minster Church of Saint Denys.
