Construction work on a £50m retail and leisure complex will start in May, it has been announced.

The Regent Circus development in Swindon will include a six-screen cinema, a supermarket and eight restaurants.

The development company, Ashfield Land, said contractors aim to complete the work in autumn 2014.

The work is taking place on the site of a demolished college building, which has lain derelict since 2006.

"We are excited at the prospect of seeing the scheme begin to take shape this year," Ashfield Land managing director Andrew Fisher said.

"With the support of major companies such as Morrisons and Cineworld our investment will result in the regeneration of what was a dilapidated area of the town centre."

Restaurant chains Ask, Nando's and Prezzo have also leased units at the complex which will include a 450-space car park.
