More than 20 of the locks on the flight have been affected by the collision
Part of the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire has been closed after a boat damaged a lock gate.
British Waterways said the top gate of the famous Caen Hill flight of locks was "severely damaged" in the accident.
The stretch of water affected is between locks 22 and 44, which have been closed to canal boats until further notice.
A Canal and River Trust spokesperson apologised for any inconvenience caused.
