Family rescued from car stuck in Staverton flood water

A family of four has been rescued from a car that became stuck in flood water in Wiltshire.

The incident, in Staverton, was one of 50 flood-related calls received by Wiltshire fire service on Saturday.

Firefighters had to pump out water at 30 locations around the county.

Group manager Ian Hunter said: "When you enter a flooded area the car will create a wave in front of it and it won't take much to inundate the engine and you will stall."

He added: "You could come across a break in the road or a manhole cover might have lifted, your tyre could go down there and again you get caught.

"Please don't drive through flood water."

Crews were called to Staverton just before 17:00 GMT and used an inflatable walkway to rescue the two adults and two children.

Mr Hunter said: "There will be a lot more water coming down onto the rivers and, where you get the Bradford-on-Avon and Salisbury areas, there will be quite high levels of river flow."
