Two men who operated a recycling plant that burned for two months have been charged with environmental offences.

Lee and David Averies are due before Swindon magistrates on 22 June to answer charges brought by the Environment Agency following the fire at Averies Recycling (Swindon) Ltd.

The fire at the waste site in Marshgate was during the summer of 2014.

The firm has since gone into liquidation. It cost more than half a million pounds to clear the site.

The Environment Agency (EA) said the charges covered the period from November 2013 to March 2015.

The allegations include the men "kept, treated or disposed of controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human life".

The pair also face charges of breaching environmental permit conditions surrounding the "volume of waste" at the site and "inadequate security".
