Wiltshire Police and Crime Commissioner candidates
- Published
Residents across Wiltshire Police's area will again have the chance to vote for a new Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), on Thursday.
The PCC elections are held every four years and in May Conservative Jonathon Seed won the race.
But he was not allowed to take up the job due to an old drink driving conviction.
A new election has been called to find his replacement.
You can listen to the full-length candidate profile interviews on BBC Sounds.
The candidates for the new Wiltshire PCC are:
Junab Ali (Lab). Also stood in May. The former Mayor of Swindon and long-serving councillor scrutinised the previous PCC on the Police and Crime Panel and wants the force to rebuild better community trust and intelligence which he says has been lost through years of austerity.
Julian Malins (Reform UK). A barrister who has previously been a councillor in London, he wants to address what he thinks is the divide opening up between the police and the public they serve.
Brian Mathew (Lib Dem): he ran for PCC in 2016, but takes over from May 2021's candidate Liz Webster. He wants to introduce "intelligent" speed cameras to highlight where the worst offenders are, and also wants to recruit an army of volunteer retired officers to foster better relationships with schools, in the hope they built up better trust as a way into tackling issues like County Lines and exploitation.
Mike Rees (Independent). Also stood in May. A former detective inspector for Wiltshire Police who wants to change the culture there. He is backed by Det Sgt Steve Fulcher whose high profile departure from the force came after the investigation into the Christopher Halliwell murders.
Philip Wilkinson (Con): A new candidate. Previously an international security specialist, he wants to bring some of the learning of that to Wiltshire Police - particularly around approaches to things like County Lines and organised rural crime.
