Police said they supported the evacuation of one of the floors

Police responded to reports of a suspicious package at the headquarters of WH Smith.

Officers said they were investigating the incident inside the distribution centre for the retail chain on Greenbridge Road in Swindon.

Wiltshire Police said they were called to the site at about 12:00 BST and had supported an evacuation of one of the floors.

A WH Smith spokesperson confirmed the "safe removal" of the package.

Officers confirmed the area had been made safe by 16:45 BST.

Police had previously urged people to avoid the area until further notice.

The WH Smith spokesperson said: "We have been working with the Police and Fire Service to ensure the safe removal of a suspicious package received into our Customer Service Centre today.

"The building has also been checked and the office is now open."
