A new cinema could open in a town, months after the former one closed.

Cinema company Vue has applied for a Premises Licence from Swindon Borough Council to redevelop the former Empire site at Greenbridge Retail Park.

The application in the window of the empty cinema has attracted speculation from members of the public that it may be reopening.

Empire collapsed into administration in July after customer numbers failed to return to pre-pandemic levels.

As a result, six cinemas around the country - including the branch in Swindon - closed and 150 people lost their jobs.

Administrators said the company's finances were also affected by the cost-of-living crisis.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wiltshire, one local resident said: "In my opinion it would be a good thing because it would make it a lot more convenient for a lot of people around this area.

"It will allow more businesses to operate with a lot more employees."

Vue Entertainment Ltd and Greenbridge Retail Park have been approached for comment.
