A man has appeared in court charged with the manslaughter of a diabetes patient who died during a slapping therapy workshop at a country hotel.

Hongchi Xiao appeared at Salisbury Magistrates' Court following his extradition to the UK from Australia.

The 60-year-old spoke to confirm his name and he was remanded in custody.

He was charged following the death of Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71, who died at Cleeve House in Seend, Wiltshire, in October 2016.

Mrs Carr-Gomm, who was born in France and moved to the UK aged 21, was diagnosed with diabetes in 1999 and struggled to inject insulin due to a fear of needles.

The court heard Mr Xiao is accused of advising Mrs Carr-Gomm to cease taking her diabetes medication.

Charles Nightingale, prosecuting, said Xiao operated a business providing medical advice or assistance to members of the public but that he was "not qualified by the British Medical Association".

Mr Xiao was previously interviewed in the UK before moving to Australia and Mr Nightingale said he currently had no lawful basis to be in the country.

Mr Xiao will next appear at Winchester Crown Court on 3 January 2024.
