A city centre coach station will be closed for four months as part of a transformation project.

Native plants and a small park will be added to Salisbury Coach Park, in Wiltshire, as part of the remodelling.

To allow the work to go ahead the coach park will be closed from 2 January 2024 until May.

Wiltshire Council said the work would create "better facilities" and "a more pleasant experience" for users.

The project also includes the creation of a mural and improvements to lighting, landscaping and signage.

Councillor Caroline Thomas, Wiltshire Council's cabinet member for transport, said the work had been scheduled to start in January as it was when "statistically fewer coach visitors come to Salisbury".

She said: "I'm sure people will agree that the current coach park site does not provide a great first impression for people visiting Salisbury and could have an impact on repeat visits.

"For Salisbury to make the most of the visitor economy and be people's destination of choice, it is important we provide better facilities for coaches to pick up and set down passengers who visit and wish to experience all this historic medieval city has to offer."

Coaches will only be able to pick up or drop off passengers at Exeter Street while the coach park is closed.

Four temporary coach parking bays will replace the current car parking area north of Carmelite Way.

Coaches will be able to use the existing drop-off bays near Salisbury Cathedral in St John's Street.

Enforcement officers will be told to move on any coaches that try to use city centre bus stops.
