A football club has removed a concrete wall surrounding their pitch after a player was injured at a nearby club.

Corsham Town Football Club has been overhauling its ground, replacing the wall with a mesh fence.

Bath City's Alex Fletcher, 23, suffered a serious head injury after leaving the pitch and colliding with a similar wall when playing at Twerton Park.

"Having a concrete block wall around a pitch is not really the best thing you can do," said Director Joe Barker.

"That was demonstrated with the awful injury at Bath last season."

The changes include refurbishing their current stand

Corsham's project is the most ambitious the club has undertaken in more than 20 years and includes a new stand.

The mesh panel fencing comes under league regulations.

Money from sponsorship and Corsham's run in the FA Vase last season has helped pay for the improvements.

Other improvements include a new club shop and bar. The current stand will also get a new public address system.

Speaking to BBC Radio Wiltshire, Mr Barker said it has been a lot of work but worth it: "We're really fortunate in that we've got quite a dynamic group of people running the club.

"The feeling that you get when you come here is probably pride. It's challenging, it's hard, and it's time consuming, but it's so worth it."
