Salisbury gas repairs lead to 24-mile diversion route

The roadworks will see a section of Churchill Way West closed

Drivers will have to take a 24-mile detour because of work to replace a leaking gas main.

Utility company SGN says it needs to start urgent works in Salisbury, Wiltshire, on the A36 Churchill Way West, and the A435 Castle Road.

The first part of the roadworks, which run from 5-17 February, has a diversion route taking drivers through Cholderton and Amesbury.

SGN said on its website the works will stop future gas leaks.

Congestion rose in Salisbury earlier in January when Exeter Street was closed for emergency repair works.

The second phase of the works, from 17 to 26 February, will be carried out on Castle Road, without a large detour.

"The section of gas main being replaced is an old metal pipe with an ongoing history of gas leaks," SGN said.

"By replacing the pipes with plastic pipes we'll provide a permanent solution to the leaks on a gas main that is crucial for supplying gas to the wider area of Salisbury."
