Hundreds of jobs are to be created when a major retailer opens a distribution centre in North Yorkshire.

Debenhams is to begin operating from a large warehouse on the outskirts of Leeds by summer 2011, creating 800 jobs at the Sherburn Distribution Park.

The firm has signed a 27-year lease to use the 667,000 sq ft (62,000 sq m) warehouse, for an undisclosed figure.

Evander Properties, which is responsible for the site, said it was an "excellent result" for the region.

'Major investment'

Debenhams will start work on the warehouse fittings immediately and it is expected to be operational from June 2011.

Sherburn Distribution Park has 1.4m sq ft of industrial accommodation with easy access to major motorway networks.

Debenhams will join existing tenant Sala International, which relocated from London, transport firm Eddie Stobart, Sainsbury's and Kingspan.

Neil Dickinson, Director of Evander Properties, said; "The major investment by Debenhams is an excellent result for the region and continues a successful year for Sherburn Distribution Park."
