A public consultation has begun over the future of a market trading in the centre of York for hundreds of years.

Newgate Market has about 100 stalls in the city centre and has traded from its present site for about 50 years.

After consultation, a bid may be made for City of York Council funding to improve the market's appearance.

Evening markets and extended trading hours are part of the plans on show at the market until Sunday.

Shoppers, market traders and businesses near the market would be involved said the council.

The market is next to the Shambles, an ancient narrow cobbled street of 15th Century timbered buildings.
