Drivers warned of icy roads across North Yorkshire

People across North Yorkshire are being warned of icy conditions on many of the region's roads as temperatures struggle to rise above freezing.

The Met Office yellow warning of ice for the county remains in force.

Forecasters said there may be a few further snow flurries in places and warned icy stretches would form on many untreated roads.

Most schools in the county re-opened on Tuesday, with only seven remaining closed.

The county council said gritting teams would continue to work to ensure main routes were ploughed and well salted.

The authority said driving conditions on minor routes would continue to be difficult and some of the more remote rural roads remain blocked by drifting snow.

The City of York Council said it would begin a fresh grit of major routes in the city from 19:00 GMT.

North Yorkshire Police has advised drivers to take great care when driving, especially on minor, untreated routes.
