Malton jockey fire deaths: Flat owner jailed

The owner of a block of flats in North Yorkshire where two jockeys died in a fire has been jailed for 12 months.

Alan Foster, 65, from Norton, had earlier pleaded guilty to breaching four fire safety regulations.

Jamie Kyne, 18, from Galway, Ireland and Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, Scotland were killed in the fire in Norton, near Malton in September 2009.

They died from burns and the effects of smoke inhalation. Caretaker Peter Brown was jailed for manslaughter in 2010.

Leeds Crown Court heard Foster had stored combustible materials under the communal stairs to the flats.

He had also failed to do a fire risk assessment.

Two years after the fire he breached the same regulations at a different property.

The court heard he had debts of more than a £1m and received just £63 a week in a pension.

The mothers of both Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson were in court to see Foster sentenced.
