Harry Gration is appointed a Member of the British Empire

BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration has been appointed an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Mr Gration, 62, from York, initially worked as a history teacher before presenting radio sports commentaries.

Other people in North Yorkshire honoured include Brenda Mackfall from Gate Helmsley who has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM)

The 79-year-old has been entertaining in nursing and residential homes from over fifty years.

Avis Turner, from Scarborough, a volunteer with Mencap, is appointed as an MBE for her services to young people.

Mr Gration presented Look North from 1984 to 1994. He returned to the programme after a brief break in 1999.

He said: "It is an overwhelming honour. Something I never thought would happen to me.

"I know my family is very proud but I have to say thank you to all my colleagues. They are the one's who have made this happen."

He has also reported on Match of the Day and Grandstand and has commentated on several Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
