York council considers late-night alcohol levy

A late-night levy on licensed premises serving alcohol after midnight is being considered by City of York Council.

Anti-social behaviour and irresponsible drinking is a concern in York, which is visited by 14,000 people between 6pm and 5am each week, the council said.

Fees would be dependant on rateable value and could cost £5.75 to £85 a week.

The council said it would hold a public consultation on the plan, with any decision to be made in December.

The Police Reform and Social Responsibility Act 2011 allows a council to charge licensed premises open between midnight and 5am.

The money raised would help pay additional costs for the council, police and other agencies dealing with crime and disorder, said the council.

Linsay Cunningham-Cross, cabinet member for crime, said the late-night levy was one of a number of initiatives it was considering "as part of a city-wide approach".
