A man in his 30s has died after being swept out to sea in Scarborough.

The man was reported in the sea near the Spa in the resort's South Bay at about 18:00 GMT on Sunday, North Yorkshire Police said.

He was recovered unconscious from the water about 40 minutes later and taken to Scarborough District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He had been walking his dog with a friend and was thought to be from the local area, the force said.

The man's friend, who was taken to hospital suffering from shock and the effects of the cold, has since been discharged.

The RNLI, Coastguard and air support from RAF Leconfield also attended the scene.
