A 20-year-old man has died after falling from the roof of a building in York city centre.

North Yorkshire Police were called at about 04:00 GMT on Wednesday to reports that a man had climbed on to the building in High Ousegate.

A short time later he fell to the ground and was taken to hospital, where he died, police said.

The area between Spurriergate and Parliament Street was closed while emergency services attended.

A police cordon was in place until about 14:30 GMT and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident had been launched, a spokesperson for the force said.
