The family of a woman injured in a crash at a heritage railway level crossing has thanked bystanders who helped at the scene.

Police said a car and a train collided at Yatt's Road, Newbridge, near Pickering in North Yorkshire, just after 14:00 BST on Sunday.

The car driver was taken to hospital. North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) said no passengers or crew were hurt.

NYMR said her family were "truly grateful" to those who assisted.

A generator wagon on the rear of the train was struck by the car at the crossing, the railway said.

In a statement released through the heritage railway, the unidentified woman's family said: "We have no idea who they were or where they were from so can't thank them directly, but we are truly grateful for your help.

"We'd also like to thank the people for their compassion and kind comments on social media."

NYMR said the safety of staff and passengers was "always our priority" and the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) had been notified.

However the RAIB said: "Based on our understanding of the circumstances we will not be launching an investigation."
