National Highways said two lanes of the A1(M) were being resurfaced after the offal spillage

A "substantial" spillage of offal has forced a day-long partial closure on a motorway in North Yorkshire.

National Highways said two of three lanes on the southbound A1(M) remained shut on Friday evening as emergency resurfacing works continued.

The impacted section is between junction 53 at Scotch Corner and junction 52 for Catterick.

The spillage happened at 22.00 BST on Thursday, said National Highways, and warned motorists of ongoing delays.

It said specialist contractors "worked through last night and today" to clear the spillage before the resurfacing work began on Friday afternoon.

National Highways said drivers were being delayed by about 30 minutes but this was "expected to build through the afternoon peak".
