Plans for a £21m scheme to transform Catterick Garrison's town centre have been submitted.

The move, which would see land around Shute Road redeveloped, includes a new town square and a building for small businesses and community groups to use.

Funding has come from Levelling Up grants, with the project falling in the Prime Minister's Richmond constituency.

North Yorkshire Council said it hoped the revamp would be complete by June 2025.

Catterick Garrison has a population of about 13,000 and is the largest garrison of the British Army.

Councillor Derek Bastiman, the authority's executive member for open to business, said: "The scheme will breathe new life into a tired area of Catterick Garrison town centre and bring new opportunities and facilities for the many people who live there."

Nationally more than 100 projects will receive funding which Levelling Up Secretary Michael Gove said would "revitalise" communities that had been "overlooked".

However, Labour said the funding had been "beset by delays and allegations of favouritism".
