Plans for up to 1,500 low carbon homes as part of a new "sustainable community" in a North Yorkshire village have been put forward to the council.

The development, which would include a primary school, nursery and public spaces, would see homes built on land to the west of Eggborough, near Selby.

Developer Banks Property said it was looking at opportunities for improving rail and bus connections to the area.

It said the project would help the village "thrive for decades to come".

A planning application for the 70-hectare site has been submitted to North Yorkshire Council for consideration.

Banks Property said it would be close to the growing Core 62 and Konect 62 employment hubs and "would provide new housing options for people and businesses looking to move to the area".

During the construction of the project, around 295 full time jobs are set to be created with a further 370 being created indirectly.

Jamilah Hassan, community relations manager at the Banks Group, said increasing the availability of "quality housing" would help attract people to live and work in the area.

She added: "This, will in turn support the development of the local economy, while ensuring there is affordable quality housing will also mean that everyone can access the housing ladder, most especially local younger people and families who want to move to or stay in the area."

The project was launched at the beginning of the year, external with consultations being held with the local community.

Developers said they intended to continue running these events over the coming months.
