Bilton Court, near the Great Yorkshire Showground, has been described as a "jewel in the crown" of Harrogate

A former 18th century stately home in Harrogate is to be converted back into residential use after recently being used as offices.

Plans have been approved to switch the Grade II listed Bilton Court on Wetherby Road, near the Great Yorkshire Showground, into a single home.

The building, built in 1740, is currently used by mapping firm Geoplan.

Planning documents said the site is no longer needed by the company due to the increase of hybrid working.

The plans, approved by North Yorkshire Council, describe the building as a "jewel in the crown" of Harrogate, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

The building was built in 1740, with side extensions added in 1820 and a chapel in 1889

The papers add: "It is proposed to convert the property back into a dwelling which we believe is more befitting of a property of this nature and will preserve and prolong the life of the building as it was first designed.

"Where new additions are made the intention has been to make them as obvious as possible to ensure they don't confuse and detract from the heritage asset."
